With the death toll from coronavirus in the United States climbing to 19, authorities have declared a state of emergency in New York.

So far, 89 individuals have tested positive for coronavirus in New York.

Governor Andrew Cuomo explained that declaring an emergency allows the state to take special control of funds and resources.

The US has registered at least 400 cases of coronavirus until now, with more than 3,000 people placed under quarantine on the Grand Princess cruise ship off the coast of San Francisco.

More than half of all US states have reported cases of the coronavirus, with many concerts and conferences cancelled and university students advised to take classes online.
